We'd like to introduce you to the man behind much of our content lately... Tobias Visuals! A full time traveller, rogue and professional videographer this fella always gets the shot. He's dragged his gear and sharpened eye from the thick of the rainforest, planes of the bush and depths of the Great Barrier Reef Check on our adventures and ones of his own. \"This would have to be the best place in the world to have a feed of mud crabs!\"

After getting neck deep in mud, devoured by sand flies and fingers almost taken off by big bucks. We pulled two stonking mud crabs from the depths of the mangroves.
\n\n
Needing to do them justice.. we hiked fifteen minutes with a gas cooker, pot of salt water, the muddies and some cold beers (a lot easier said then done).
\n\n
We perched up a prime spot, boiled for exactly for 22mins, and had one of the best feeds of our life...
\n\n
Couldn't get the smile off our faces if ya tried!

\nI.SEA. Conservation is a non-profitorganization dedicated to preserving the health of the ocean, so that we may longcontinue to swim, dive, fish, and adventure in healthy seas filled with marinelife.
I.SEA.’s roots extend across the globe, where oceans take on different forms and harbour varying assemblages of both flora and fauna alike. From the exposed, harsh seasof the Falkland Islands to the sheltered coves of the Hebrides of Scotland, I.SEA.’s cofounder Sam Coe’s love for the aquatic realm was established in thetemperate climates of the South and North Atlantic. Partner Jess Strickland has salt in her blood. Daughter of a fisherman, she grew up fishing and spearing in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, where the seas of New Guinea, Samoa and Queensland team with exuberance and colour.

More recently, Sam and Jess worked for a year in eco-tourism on the Great Barrier Reef and witnessed, first hand the 2016 mass coral-bleaching event. Following the aftermath, the pair jetted off to Indonesia in pursuit of sea monsters and dragons. Living in the town of Labuan Bajo, on Flores Island, for 6 months they found what they were looking for in pristine coral reefs, mass aggregations of manta rays, blood thirsty Komodo dragons, and more species of fish and invertebrates than they thought plausible.

Surrounding the astonishing array of biodiversity though, was an even more overwhelming presence. Plastic debris littered the shores of each oneof the 29 islands within the park. Sam and Jess have shared anecdotes involving manta rays “feeding in a sea of plastic”. Not a day would go by where thecouple wouldn’t see the effects of plastic in the ocean.
\nRather than turning a blind eye toAustralia’s bleaching events and Komodo’s plague of plastic, Sam and Jess founded their non-profit group to aid in conserving these ocean habitats and more like them. The I.SEA. team navigate their cause down five main avenues: Collaboration, Education, Research, Awareness, and Actions.

With little to no idea where/how to catch these prehistoric looking creatures we did what any man would do... put out an instagram post asking for someone to give us a 30 second crash course into Saratoga fishing. This resulted in us heading north via BCF and stocking up with a car full of 'Weedless Frog' lures.
We arrived and setup camp on the edge of some beautiful wetlands just before sunset and were honestly like kids on Christmas eve, so excited about the prospect of chasing a new species. Not even the howling dingoes or pigs rummaging through the camp could dampen the spirits... up at sunrise and into it!
It soon became obvious why we needed to use 'weedless' style lures, the reeds and lilipads cover the majority of the surface of the water and the idea is to land the lure on a lilipad and then jump it off where in theory a big Saratoga is waiting in ambush to BOOF it. The first couple of casts brought no enquiries and a number of questions started running through me head; \"Are there even Saratoga in these lakes?\", \"Should I retrieve faster/slower?\", \"Do they even eat frogs!?\"
We almost had a heart attack when on one retrieve of the frog there was an almighty BOOF and we all screamed like school girls at a Bieber concert. Wow! There is fish in here, and they do like frogs! It missed the hooks, but the great thing about surface lures is you get to see that initial strike, which is so epic.
For the next couple of hours we then found out that Toga have really bony mouths and don't like getting hooked! Boof after Boof that resulted in no bent rods.
The next series of events is etched into my memory and seemed to happen in slow motion... My frog landed in the middle of the lake a couple of metres away from some lilipads, the first twitch caused a massive eruption when it got smashed, once again no hookup but as I continued to work the frog along the surface Az shouted \"Ohhhh he's right behind it\" as this massive bow wave followed, the lure jumped on top of a lilipad and I paused for a split second to allow the fish to catch up and wait underneath the lilipad... a small jump of the frog back into the water and sure enough the Toga engulfed it, this time.... FISH ON!!

Teamwork is essential to land these fish through the weeds on the bank and once we got the fish in, wow you haven't seen two happier blokes! Carried on like absolute pork chops to the point that none of the footage is usable for the GN Episode, but what a great memory! The next couple of hours were some of the most memorable fishing moments I've ever had. Wading out through the reeds and having these gnarly looking fish smash the surface frogs right in front of us.
Ya only get one 'first time' and the smile on Az's face when he lost his Toga virginity was that of pure stoke! If you haven't had the chance to chase these awesome fish yet, then make sure you put it on your bucket list! Keep an eye out for this Episode on our socials in the next month or so- it's a beauty!

So we put our thinking caps on, had a few Northerns and put pen to paper. Can't remember whose idea it was but Saratoga somehow ended up on the list.
It wasn't until after the Episodes were approved it dawned on us that the accumalitive tally of Saratoga caught between us came to the grand total of 1, and that was caught about 15 years ago deep in the guts of PNG (slightly out of the budget).

In all my years fishing up the farm the biggest Barra we have landed was 82cm. This one going a clean 85cm... Stoked for her! After a few high fives and pics, Celina went back to casting the same spot for the next ten minutes, truly hooked on this whole fishing business.
\n
Satisifed with the show I'd put on for the afternoon and this girl from South America thriving in the thick of the Far North Qld wilderness, we started trekking it back to the shed. As the last of the sun set, I couldn't help but think how incredible it is to share such firsts with people in your own backyard!

She's asked when we're going fishing again, but I can't help but think I may have set the expectation pretty high! To possibly be continued... Az.

Last week I'd promised to take Celina, an Argentinean traveller who works on my familes farm, on a date. Little did she knew that meant hiking through thick grass, wild rasberry vines and mud to go fishing...

I was realived that she took to the idea with enthusiam, so after we knocked off work we went for a treck to the high reaches of the North Johnstone River, 25km West of Innisfail.
\n\n
Arriving to the bank of the river and not keen on making the front page of the news, I gave her the safety speal on the big lizards that call this place home. We then went through the basics; casting, reeling, twitching the lure and what to do when you catch a fish.
\nAs I watched her casting and reeling the little hard body lure, I though to myself... \"Far out, catching a fish, any fish, would really add to the whole \"fishing date\" experince\". This was soon followed by a big silver flash, then the lure dissapeared and all hell broke loose. WHACK! Down the tip of the rod went as the little Shimano Stradic Spin reel went absolutely screaming!
\nAnd she was on... \"Up it, Up it! Up it for the rent!\" I kept yelling at her, trying to mask my desire to grab the rod off her thinking she was goin' to drop what looked a big barra! Celina was yelling things in Spanish and widing faster then a Japanese Jig Master. After a ten mintue performance of aerials, head shakes, long runs and almost busting up in big snags the fish began to tire. Forgetting my own croc advice, not wanting the hooks to pull or lure to drop, I ran into the water and grabbed the leader... dragging one of the most impressive catches I've seen to date onto the bank. A beautiful, fat, healthy, chrome Barramundi. I could still hear the reel furiously winding and looked up to see Celina upping it... \"Haha you can stop winding now!\" It was a proud moment.

SPANISH MACKEREL

They're great fun to catch on both line or spear, and also provide a great feed! They are our 'Species of the Month'. Hopefully these tips can help you land a few this season.
\n
Where to find them:
Pressure Points- The front side of the reef or bommie where the current is hitting. These change throughout the day as the tide changes, the best way to find the 'Pressure Edge' is to sit in neutral on top of the reef and get a bearing of the current direction, then go to the front edge where it first hits the reef. This is where the baitfish and hence the Spanish Mackerel will be.
\n\n
Shoals- Any ground that rise a few metres on the charts and has rubble or reef on the bottom will hold schools of bait and hence the Mackerel won't be too far away.
\n\n
Tips & Tricks for Spearing Spanish Mackerel
* A 'flasher' is great to bring them in. (Any of these work well)
\n* Burley- no need to make it rain chum, but a bit of burley will often make the fish hang around long enough and present a shot. Fish frames work great.
\n* Avoid eye contact and act disinterested in the fish.
\n* If dropping down on a fish, try place yourself in its blind spot to close the gap. (Example in video)
\n\n

Line Fishing for Spanish Mackerel
Trolling: Probably the most reliable way to catch them. Rapala Magnums or Halco Laser Pros work well, trolled at 4-6 knots around the mentioned areas. Make sure to keep an eye on your sounder and mark any schools of bait.
Live bait/floater: While bottom fishing it's always a great idea to have a livey or floater out the back for a rogue Macky.
Popping / Jigging: Adrenalin packed and without a doubt the most exhilerating way to catch them! An aerial surface strike of a Spanish Mackerel is something you will never forget!

The next best shot is a 'holding shot' in the centre of the fish between the top and bottom (dorsal and anal) fins.

Except this was all caught on film!
To set the scene... it's a glass out day 80kms off the East coast of Australia, and we're fishing out of a BOAB boat that Andrew Symonds the cricketing legend (and our childhood hero) agreed to lend us over a couple of beers. What a champion bloke! I know a lot of people that would probably offer up their wife before letting another bloke use their boat.

The water temp has started to cool down so I thought it was my last good chance to target some Barramundi before switching to offshore species for the next few months.
Personally I was blown away by some of the boats that were on show, 300hp ski boats kitted out with 3 x 12 inch sounders, on the dash and another one up the front on the casting platform to go with the Minn Kota just for good luck!
I breathed a sigh of relief when Duane pointed out his boat, 14ft tinny with a tiller steer 50hp... Back to basics, this will do me just fine.
There was 100 of the best local anglers (oh well 99 of the best, and one tag along- yours truly) fishing the event and the general consencus was that with the cold water the best bet was small prawn plastics to try and entice a Barramundi. I had a peek through some of the other fellas tackle boxes, and some of the Prawn plastics they had looked so good I wanted to cover them in a bit of garlic butter and throw 'em on the BBQ!
The fishing was slow so Duane pulled out an old dusty tackle box, wiped off the cobwebs and tied on this old busted up lure that I'd never seen anything like... It had a cupped head like a popper, but also a bib. I couldn't work out if it was a popper that wanted to dive, or a diver that wanted to pop! Duane crushes his can of Northern and reckons \"The old Lancey Butler should wake the buggers up\".
What happened next made my jaw drop to the ground... I had been finessing a small prawn around the snags all morning with not a touch and Duane lobs this hybrid lure into the middle of the creek, one twitch and BOOF! The unmistakable explosion of a big Barramundi!
A beautiful 78cm Barra was landed. The biggest of the whole competition, from a tinny, on one of the most perculiar lures I've ever seen. How good! Mr. Lance Butler, take a bow! (Lure in slideshow below). I ended up pulling my weight as well and we finished 6th out of 50 boats.
What a great comp!
